Denise Mendez is a Principal Software Engineer working at Microsoft building Mixed Reality Technology. She is an entrepreneur, mother, avid mountain biker, runner, and award-winning potter and Toastmaster. She has worked at Nasa, Motorola, and Magic Leap, and part of the board for BASE South Florida’s STEM ecosystem. Her day job includes engineering in the gaps, fixing processes, writing code to help products and systems get unstuck. She is heavily involved in bringing innovative solutions to education through methodologies like positive deviance. While working to using data engineering to create stable holograms in mixed reality, over the last 8 years she has be working on how to scale technologies in the classroom to fix the pipeline problem of historically underrepresented groups in STEM. Currently she has connected 1000’s of students at all age levels with emerging technologies like Mixed Reality, Metaverses, and AI and has her eyes set on reaching 100,000 students by the end of 2023.
